Carpet FAQ

HOW MUCH EXTRA CARPET SHOULD I BUY?

Most flooring contractors recommend adding a 10–15% waste factor to your total square footage. This accounts for perimeter cuts, seam overlaps, and pattern matching, ensuring you have enough material from the same dye lot to complete the project.

HOW IS CARPET SOLD?

Carpet is sold by both the square foot and the square yard. Professional installers traditionally calculate needs in square yards (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft) to align with standard manufacturing measurements and roll sizes.

WHAT IS A CARPET ROLL WIDTH?

Standard carpet rolls are 12 feet wide. This fixed width is a critical factor in planning your installation, as it determines seam placement and can lead to unavoidable waste in rooms that don't match these dimensions perfectly.

HOW DO I CALCULATE SQUARE YARDS?

To calculate square yards, find the total area in square feet by multiplying room length by width, then divide that total by 9. For example, a 12' x 15' room is 180 square feet, which converts to exactly 20 square yards.

DO I INCLUDE CLOSETS?

Yes, you should always measure closets separately and include them in your total area. They require dedicated cuts and material, and ignoring them in your initial estimate frequently leads to material shortages during installation.
