HOW DO RISE AND RUN RELATE TO PERCENT GRADE?
Percent grade is calculated by dividing the rise by the run and multiplying by 100. For example, a 1-foot rise over a 10-foot run results in a 10% grade. This measurement is commonly used in civil engineering and landscaping for drainage planning.
WHEN SHOULD I USE ROOF PITCH VS STANDARD SLOPE?
Roof pitch is typically expressed as a ratio of 'rise over 12' (e.g., 4/12), whereas standard slope is a simple ratio of rise to run (e.g., 1:3). Use roof pitch for architectural roof design and standard slope for general grading, ramps, or stairs.
WHAT ARE SAFE SLOPE RANGES FOR RAMPS AND DRAINAGE?
For ADA-compliant ramps, a maximum slope of 1:12 (8.3%) is required. For effective surface drainage in landscaping, a minimum slope of 2% (1/4 inch per foot) is usually recommended to prevent standing water and ensure proper runoff.
